Nicer than expected Nov 21, 2009

I am very pleased with the remote control for my H4n. All the controls I need are present, and I was pleasantly surprised to see that there are LEDs on the control to indicate operating mode, one of which changes color when the record level is too high. Very nice! Also unexpected (but appreciated) was the extension cord that came with the control. My only concern with this product is its cord, which appears a bit flimsy. Time will tell if the cord is durable enough for my application.

Relatively Expensive But Necessary Jul 05, 2009
By Dave This remote is nothing special other than it works with the Zoom H4n recorder. The H4n recorder is an amazing multi-track recorder that can record mono, stereo or surround sound music of musical instruments or other sound source. It is sold at a very good price compared to its capabilities. However, the H4n has the unavoidable fault of having sensitive microphones that pick up all sounds, including those sounds of pushing bottons on the recorder. I believe this remote control should have been made part of the H4n package instead of being a relatively high cost accesory. The remote works well and does eliminate the noises caused by touching the recorder, but you still need to be careful that movement of the wire when using the remote is not picked by the recorder's sensitive microphones. If the remote were added as part of the recorder package for $10, I am sure people would still buy the recorder at the higher price. I am just not happy about paying $40 for an accessory that is nowhere near that in absolute value. It is just a matter of psychology and marketing methods. I think there is some price for the recorder that includes a remote that would result in addional sales and profit even though the margin might be slightly less. But what do I know, they got me to buy the recorder and later to buy the remote as well. In total, I still got a good value. For those musicians who are not familiar with the H4n, I would encourage them to look for it on the web because it is truly a value in quality portable recording. After you buy it, you will pay $40 for a remote as well.

compared to marantz's remote, more features lower cost Apr 08, 2010

If you have a H4n, this is a must have for twenty bucks.
It mimics most of the front panel keys and can make level adjustments by remote (Marantz is just a record, mark, and pause 3 button remote - to stop you must go back to the front panel or else add your own stop switch and resistor, instructions are included in the manual to expand its abilities)
I like the full compliment of indicators and switches on zoom. It uses a 4 conductor 2.5mm TRRS plug and since those are harder to find than hens teeth they include a generous extension giving you easily 15 feet and probably pushing 20 between both the remote and the extension.
Sure there are features that could not be put into the remote like a battery life indicator, but overall it does more and costs less than other remotes I own. The 4 conductor 2.5mm TRRS extension is worth having in your cable collection all by itself!
My only complaint about zoom is that their amplifiers are noisier than Marantz by 20 dB due to their signal path for line level recording, so I still use the PMD-661Marantz PMD661 Portable SD Recorder as my primary digitsl recorder, but since it can't do quad channel recording I pull out the zoom when needed. I also like zoom's stereo mics better than marantz's and the built in mics have better amps than zoom's inputs so that config yields good reproduction of stereo sound without a stereo bar and 2 xlr cables. The H4n makes a GREAT mic level recorder, and the remote helps verify operation.

A must if you have a Zoom. Jan 25, 2011
By Jason W. Fudge If you are thinking about purchasing the Zoom h4n do it. And then also make sure you get this. I would recommend you get one of the kits, because pretty much you are getting a free sd card.
If you record without this, then you WILL have handling noise. And it's horrible, super bassy and no way to work around it. So get this and then you won't have to worry about it.
Plus a nice feature with this (and the Zoom h4n) is that you can mark clips while you are recording. This is handy for me when I am conducting interviews. If the person says something that I like then I just hit the record button again and it places a mark in the file. Bring it into my editor and I don't have to search for it on the timeline.
Also, on a side note. If you do own the Zoom make sure you install the newest firmware. They finally have separate volume control on the XLR inputs.

remote RC4 for zoom h4n works fine Dec 18, 2009
By W. C. Wiseman I've only used it a couple times - but no trouble with it. All buttons work fine. It is very convenient - saves getting up and pushing buttons on the recorder and running back to your instrument to play... it's nearly a necessity.
