4Monster lead sounds in a small package  Jul 19, 2011 By Vineet Goel
This is a cool little gadget. After having played an Amplug AC30 for some time, I was looking for better lead sounds. AC30 is good for clean and crunch sounds and bluesy solos. But it definitely lacks in high gain solo department. Enter the Amplug Lead in the scene. This unit is very good from the sound, price and portability stand points.

Here is a brief explanation about the sounds:

Clean: Put the gain on 0, volume on 10, tone to your liking. Roll back the guitar volume to around 4-5 (depends how hot your pickups are, whether they are single coil humbucker etc). You get a nice clean sound, closer to a marshall than a fender.

Crunch: Gain around 4, volume and tone to your liking. Guitar volume full. You get a nice crunch for chord work and rock fillers.

Lead: Now this is where this shines. The amount of gain and sustain is unbelievable. And it still retains note definition on higher gain levels. It does get a bit noisy after the gain goes above 7. Would have been nice to have some sort of noise gate circuit in there. Take half a point away for that.

Delay: Just OK. You get a bathroom echo with 3-4 repeats, not a spacey lead sound. Take another half point away for that.

Sounds awesome through a pair of quality headphones. Even plugged it into my studio monitors, and I must say that I was impressed with the sound. Plugged in the output of my laptop into this little guy and I was able to jam along with songs/backing tracks.

Looks a bit fragile the way its constructed, but I plan to be very careful with it. I would definitely have to buy again if it broke.

All in all, awesome unit. If you are trying to decide between the different Amplugs, just go with the Lead. You get many different sounds by doing small tweaks.

4amplug lead  Apr 08, 2009 By Jorge A. Zuniga "CerealLOVER"
I had the metal amplug, which i thought was pretty great for the price. That little thing had a lot of sustain and it could get very saturated and it never gave me any noise. And for the price is was a nice investment. Sadly though it broke. So i bought this one the lead definitly sounds bigger,it sounds more mid-y compared to the metal one and this one can also get even moore gain which is pretty great except it then starts giving you noise. The thing i didnt like very much about it was the effect. It sounds good just not great. I was expecting more of an echo effect that could be adjusted, the effect is more of a short delay/echo thing which isnt very great...and the echo was one of the biggest reasons i bought this thing and i rarely even use that feature,i alsmot never have it on,i just use the regular amp. So sadly this little thing is a 4 overall...and i wish they could make these things abit more sturdier.just a bit more! But i have to admit it sounds pretty decent for leads.. i wouldve given it a better score if it was the same price as the other amplugs

4Almost perfect  Mar 28, 2011 By realkman666
The Lead model is the only one I have tried so far. I use it with a seven-string Washburn guitar fitted with (too) brutal SD Invader pickups, so keep that in mind.

I was expecting a good rock tone, but the Lead is pretty much in metal territory as soon as the gain goes higher than 3 on the dial. This means that there is no clean tone to speak of. Fiddling with the three dials gives a few usable tones, so it's quite versatile for what it is. It sounds best through my PC speakers, but it's also good through my Snug headphones. The distortion is surprisingly thick, with great sustain and note definition. The amPlug sounds truly better than many little amps I've heard. The delay feature is a cool addition, but it's not very good. It's a watery, splashy slapback that contributes mostly to creating background noise. For relaxed lead work, it can work, but I leave it off. A subtle reverb would have been better, I think.

Every time I switch the delay on or off, I always turn some of the dials as well, so it's a bit annoying. Blame my big clumsy hands. The construction is not very impressive either. If it survives a drop, it wouldn't survive the stepping on it. The hiss and noise when selecting split-humbuckers is deafening, so I'd be scared to try the Lead with a Strat or Tele. The mix with an MP3 player works well too, so you can hear yourself over the music. This little thing keeps me playing hour after hour.

I'm very happy with the Lead, I will surely get another one, either the AC30 or the Bass for my bass guitar.

2Great while it lasted  Jan 28, 2012 By Brian Menke "Brian"
I was very happy with this, until it quit working. I really only used it lightly over a few months and when I tried it again after taking a break from the guitar for a couple months, it no longer worked, even though I replaced the batteries and the light comes on and everything. Very frustrated as I can no longer return it to Amazon as that period has expired. I do not blame Amazon for this at all.

5EXCELLENT!!  Dec 17, 2011 By sis
I love this thing! This little amp is awesome. I just love the FX effects. The gain is awesome, too. I also love that I can play along to my mp3 player. I also from time to time plug in my metronome to practice on my timing. I can't describe the incredible sound out of this little thing. I am very impressed with it.
