4Nice little amp!  Nov 29, 2009 By M. Kayan
Coming from a 20 watt solid state practice amp, this is definitely a step up.
I expected the tube distortion to sound more pleasing than that of my old solid state, but even the cleans are nicer - they have a sort of chimey quality.
I'm not sure if it's due to the tubes or the Celestion speaker.

I may never use this feature, but there is a speaker out jack to use with an external cab.

I picked up a variant with an 8" speaker to save space, but I believe it's identical to the 10" model otherwise.
I've had it for a few months now, and while it doesn't have the bells and whistles on some of Vox's modeling amps or Fender's tube-based Super Champ, I returned those amps and kept this one based solely on sound quality, which is highly subjective.

Not an amp for metal, but well suited to blues, jazz and classic rock. I don't usually like the amp's breakup above 50% gain. I may add an overdrive pedal to my setup.

The only thing I wish this amp had was a headphone jack.

5Can't stop playing!!!  Dec 31, 2009 By JetPowers
I seldom write reviews but figured it might help some sitting on the fence. Like my opening remark, the hallmark of this great little amp (AC4TV8) is that it's incredibly fun to play and I can't put it down.
For tone snobs, what can I say? I've got about 15 tube amps (including pre-CBS Fenders and a true '63 Vox AC30 TB) and 35 yrs playing and this one not only makes me want to keep playing but is the most accessible of all. I went for the 8" version despite negative comments of the 1/10 Watt setting. Some say it's a novelty. Let me put it this way..........IT'S NOT!!! Is the tone as good as a non-attenuated amp, well no but it's "different" and still good and major fun. My only issue is it distorts too much past 3/4 volume (G&L MFD single coil pickups) but you can play and not really disturb others too much without resorting to headphones. I've been using a high quality Z Airbrake before this but even on my 4W 5F1 Tweed Champ it's too loud for family (unless it's not and my playing just grates on their eardrums). I have to stuff pillows around it even on 'Maximum Bedroom' setting (which also robs tone ...and overheats tubes). Plus the extra cables to run that setup....
Since I bought the AC4 for fun practice, I figured why not go all the way and get the 1/10W because the 10"-1/4W version seemed still just too loud and that defeats the purpose. I would even consider recording the 1/10W setting. It has a quality all it's own and definitely tube(y). I was hoping to not like it and return it having gotten the "want" out of my system but is a definite keeper....#16...oh well. But this one will not sit in a closet like the others. It's going in the living room. I'll keep my others on Airbrake attenuator but this one will be happily carried from room to room. It is so lively I don't even need reverb. Bottom line..tone opinions aside..I don't want to put it down..I may lose weight 'cause I don't want to stop to even eat...what better endorsement!
Oh, one more thought I've also been using a Line 6 Pod XT for versatility, fun, low volume play - it's great, but the AC4 feels more "connected" , real and just plain inviting to play.
Update 5/28/11 - still loving it. No one yells at me to get that ugly thing out of the way, sound is fantastic. Just goes to show you can't believe all negative reviews you read - at least this little guy suits me. I do miss the shimmering woody tone of a high headroom Fender, but I have those amps for when I need and again, that's not the purpose of a 4W boutique.

4does one thing, but does it good  Mar 29, 2010 By J. Robertson
Very "VOX"-y sounding amp. If you want a "British invasion" sound, this is it in a small package. Not simulated, not modeled, just reduced in physical size. It doesn't sound like a Fender, and it doesn't sound like a Marshall, it sounds like its own thing.

Four watts is louder than you think. If you're used to how loud (say) a 40 watt amp is, you might expect 4 watts to be only 1/10th as loud. But watts don't work that way. Four watts is HALF as loud as 40. Four watts turned up to the point of distortion is not nearly as "wife safe" as you may be thinking when you see this amp. I used this at a jam session at a party before the band went on, the guitarist asked to use my amp. Granted it was a very small party in a small space, but that should prove it goes above "bedroom" levels.

In other words, you will find yourself needing to use the 1 watt and 1/4 settings for practicing, so be glad the amp has them. This was pretty much the feature that caused me to get this amp over the other <10 watt tube amps on the market these days.

It really does sound best on 4 watts, presumably because the speaker has a lot to do with the sound and only the full power setting is driving it to capacity. If I was going to record it, I'd probably go with the full power for the best tone, but the lower settings are good for practice.

There is not much clean headroom on this amp, but that's clearly by design. The cleans are beautiful and sparkly at low volumes, but it dirties up fast especially with loud pickups. You will find yourself using your guitar's volume pot to control the distortion. If you're after a really clean EARLY 60's sound, you will want to look in a Fender-wise direction. This amp is not that clean. I also shouldn't have to tell you this is not a metal amp, by which I don't just mean thrash or death metal. I wouldn't even want to play 70's metal on a amp this 60's-sounding.

I've found distortion and even overdrive pedals kind of sacrilegious to use with this amp. All they do is add their own fake-tube sound on top of this amp's real tube sound. What it does sound good with is a compressor to get some sustain without changing the character of the distortion. And believe it or not, fuzz pedals because they are period-appropriate for the era that this amp's sixties heritage.

5First All Tube Amp - Perfect!!  Apr 19, 2010 By K. Ray
I set out looking for a good amp that could get good tone at low volumes in my house. I don't like practicing with headphones. When I first heard the AC4TV I could immediately tell the difference between the solid state amps I was using and this tube amp. I finally understood what that tube sound was. The attenuator does help to keep the volume low, but at 1/4 watt I don't like the sound. The 1 watt setting is too loud for when everyone is a sleep, but I can use it without disturbing the household when everyone is a wake. The 4 watt setting can get quite loud which I like because I can use it when playing with friends. The tone is the best on the 4 watt setting.

The tube breaks up between 12 and 2 depending on how hard you push it. People say it sounds like a Vox and I'm not sure what that means, but it sounds good to me. I have other amps, but none that sound this good. I have a Peavey Austin 400 which would blow you into next week!! Definitely can't use that in the house. I have a Fender Super Champ XD (15watt hybrid amp) and it is good too. I have the ZT Lunchbox and that thing is very loud to be so small, I use it with my harmonica.

Since I got the AC4TV, it is the amp I prefer. I just started playing electric guitar the last 3 years, I was mostly acoustic before then, so I'm learning what sounds good and how to get the tone I'm looking for. I immediately knew I had to have this amp when I heard it. I like a little reverb, chorus, vibe, etc and I didn't want to buy a bunch of pedals so I bought the Boss ME25 Guitar Multi Effect Pedal and it is very easy to dial in a good sound. The AC4TV takes the pedal well.

Bitmo has a mod for the AC4TV if you want to get a little more out of it. I heard changing the speaker can give you more headroom, but honestly if I had more headroom the amp would be too loud for it's intended purpose. Changing the tubes can make the break up sound a little sweeter. The amp sound fine stock.

You really should buy this amp, you won't be disappointed. And if you are you can always return it.

5amazing tone, great buy  Feb 01, 2010 By S. Roy
Its definitely not as versatile as the super champ xd or something in a similar price range but god is the tone delicious. I'd compromise a ton of features for great tone any day. In my opinion, for this price range, this is the definitely the best buy.
