5Awesome little combo amp  Feb 07, 2012 By David Okutman
I purchased mine about 2 years ago. I was looking for a good tube amp with great clean sound as well as a great dirty /distorted sound. I went to the music store to checkout a Mesa Lone Star, but the only one they had in stock was a 2x12, which was way to heavy for my needs. The sales clerk showed me some more Mesa's, but none of them fit the sound I was looking for. My other choice was a Bogner tube amp, but I couldn't find a music store close by to try one out. As a last ditch effort, the sales clerk pointed to the new Marshall Haze 40 watt combo amp. I kinda looked at it with not much hope, but I figured "what the heck, I'm here, lets give it a listen".

I was completely caught off guard. This little amp had so much tone, clean and dirty, I couldn't believe it.
I like to crank amps up a bit to get their true tone, so the manager offered to let me take it in their "performance room" and give it a workout. I asked the clerk to bring along a 4x12 cabinet as well, so I could see what this sounded like with a cab under it. I was not disappointed. This little amp sounded great. It had some built in digital effects such as reverb, chorus, delay, and a "vibe" effect, which is a bit like phase shifting. No they aren't top of the line "boutique" pedals, but the reverb and delay sound very good. I have actually made some recordings in the studio with it, with my PRS custom 24 plugged straight in, and it sounded phenomenal. No outboard effects needed.

The clean tone is what really sold me on this amp. I've had so many amps over the years that had a great dirty or overdrive sound, only to come up weak on the clean side. This amp has a great clean channel, and also has a "bright" switch. The "bright" switch is used to change settings for single coil vs. humbucking pick ups. Nice glassy clean sounds, which are only enhanced with a bit of reverb and delay. The amp responds well to subtle nuances in your playing style, and lets them shine through.

The dirty channel sounds great as well, very surprising for such a little amp. I think the sound has a lot to do with the cabinet configuration. The back is sealed, with some large holes to let out the low frequencies. It seems to work well, and has a lot of bottom end even with out a cab underneath. Once you connect a 4x12 cab, it really opens up nice. Plenty of thump and crunch to go around. Great tones!

That being said, it does have an effects loop, and works very well with other pedals.

I have seen a few comments from some folks that got this amp when it first came out, and they had some technical issues with it. I can state that mine has been rock solid since day one, and I'm hoping what ever tech problems Marshall had with this amp, have been addressed. If anyone else has purchased one lately, please leave a review so others may know your experience as well.

Bottom line is, I went to the store ready to drop 2 grand down on a new amp, and ended up coming home with this one. I've been a musician for over 30 years, and I've had my share of great gear and amps, so I think I have a good idea of what good tones are. I've used this amp at many gigs, and it works flawlessly. It is light weight (as far as tube amps go) and sounds great. If you're looking for a great sounding little tube combo that won't drain the bank, give this little monster a try.
