Great upgrade for a cheap combo! Mar 08, 2012

As much as I love the sound of a Fender combo, my preference for tube amps, and for recording incredibly quietly (conversation level) means my choice of amps is quite limited. I picked up a used Vibro Champ XD at my local guitar shop and instantly loved its sound.
One space for improvement, though: the wimpy 8" speaker!
As a little experiment I hooked the Vibro Champ's speaker out to my VHT special 6's speaker (that one's a 10"). Instantly it sounded MUCH better! OK that's it! I'm getting the Kustom cab! It was either that or some sexy tube-amp-safe switching box, which would have cost more than this speaker. Easy choice, then :-)
I had to remind myself on initial tests that new speakers often sound tight and stiff. Almost unmusical. After even two hour's use (at my usual gentle volume) it's already settling in nicely. The obvious increase in bass is very welcome, but not overpowering (something Fenders seem to exhibit - limited bass, and there's no way I'm going to a 15"!!), and the larger speaker seems to have smoothed out some of the fizziness / raspiness of the stock speaker. I've found myself using voice number 2 ("fat tweed") rather than my previous fave voice 6 (bright blackface) since switching the speaker, so you might want to anticipate some eq adjustments if you're making a similar switch in size of speaker and/or cabinet.
It site nicely underneath the Vibro Champ, and doesn't take up too much room. Build quality is just fine, weight is totally manageable, packaging was more than adequate.
One thing - the two wires connecting the input jack to the speaker were disconnected. Just make sure to check this before switching your amp on :-)
Great cab. Highly recommended, particularly at this price.
(Loud) bang for buck - just mix 'n match May 08, 2012

I bought this cabinet to match with the 5H Head (reviewed elsewhere). The cabinet came well packaged and seems well put together. It is an open-back design, and fairly light. Just the perfect size for the bedroom or studio. The clear, sparkly tone of the head is projected very well through this cabinet and its 30W speaker, a good match. Even so, I decided to change the speaker so I could use the cab with a Marshall JMD1 head which has a lot more power (50W). I replaced the stock speaker with an Eminence Man o War speaker, and could not be happier with the result. So much so, that I decided to go for another Kustom 1x12 cabinet, instead of plunking down more dough for a dedicated 2x12 cab. This time I will be replacing the stock speaker with an Eminence Texas Heat speaker. I am looking forward to hearing the results of mixing "British" and "American" voiced speakers, one more oriented towards lows and highs, and the other one more towards the mids - in theory this could be tonal nirvana....I will post an update when I have received that second pair. Thanks to these inexpensive cabinets, I will be able to go "solo" with one of them as well whenever I want - versatility for relatively few $$.
Update: I now have the second cab - this time with a Texas Heat speaker, and it does sound entirely different from the Man-o-War cab - a lot warmer, much less bite, but not muddy. The combination of both cabs really gives dimension to the sound, my high expectations have been met. And it will get better as both speakers get broken in... Swapping out the speakers was super easy btw: remove the two small panels in the back for easy access. The 8-hole eminence speakers don't line up with the holes for the stock speaker, except for two of them, so just use two additional wood screws (or more if you insist) , and you are done.

I own two of these cabs, using one for my Kustom The Defender 5H Class A Guitar Amp Head and one for my Kustom Defender 15 Watt Class A Guitar Head (I connect the heads with CBI Ultra Duty 12 Gauge Speaker Cable with 1/4 Inch Ends - 6 Foot.)
The cab sounds pretty good and is well matched to my heads, which is not surprising considering they are all made be the same manufacturer. I've been pleased with them, and especially pleased about getting decent quality 12" cabs at such bargain prices. I have heard my Kustom Defender 15 Watt Class A Guitar Head played through a Crate Blackheart BH112 Little Giant 1X12 Guitar Cabinet and must say that the Blackheart is a vastly superior cabinet that I am considering getting.
Despite my fondness for the Blackheart cab, you truly cannot go wrong this Kustom 1x12, and pound for pound it is an exceptional bargain - and it does sound pretty darn good.
