Worth Three Times as Much. There's a catch though... Apr 21, 2012
By Daniel A. Sargent Straight out of the box, this amp is solid. It has a nice bite to it and sounds great and chimey. Since it's only one channel, you gotta turn down the gain and crank the Master Volume to 6-9 o'clock to get any clean sounding effects/distortion. The 12ax7 (highest gain rating of all) tubes dirty up the sound very quickly. That's about all I can say for the Jet City 20 Watt combo...out of the box, that is.
Now,
What happens when you open it up, void the warranty, and MOD this amp?
Well, it becomes a $1200 Boutique Amp OVERNIGHT.
If you can solder, then all you have to do to make this amp ROCK is replace the CAPACITORS. Then, replace the STOCK CHINESE TUBES with good, matched and balanced JJ Tubes (balanced for phase inverter) Also, you can solder in a 3H Hammond "choke" (an AC current stabilizer) to elevate the performance of the amp to a whole new level.
If you do the math: $300 amp + $25 capacitors + $25 3H Hammond "choke" + $45 5 new 12ax7 tubes ====================== $395 amp that SOUNDS like $1200!!
If you have the patience, decent soldering skills, and $80 or so to spare after the $300, buying & modding this amp is an excellent money saving investment for reaching that tone you've been dreaming about your whole life. I've achieved this after running my Boss metal-core pedal through it with the gain down and volume up. The harmonics and bass response is Zakk Wylde like and is dangerous to children and expectant mothers. Be Warned!
Worth more than it costs! Feb 28, 2012

Wow. Just wow. I desperately wanted a tube amp. Solid state just wasn't doing it for me anymore. I wanted that natural, warm overdriven sound I'd heard on so many albums from the 60s and 70s. This is it. This is like an old-school Marshall. The EL-84s crank out the gain. This amp is made for blues and rock. It can do clean, too, but If you're playing over a drummer, bassist and another guitar, you'll be playing dirty. The overdrive is lush and the amp itself is amazingly loud.
It's a bit bigger than amps in it's power category, but it's well worth it. The reverb is a nice addition and the presence knob makes a big difference.
The amp is only one channel. This is really my only complaint, but it's a big part of why you only pay $300. You either need to use your guitar volume (what it's there for) or a pedal if you need to up your volume at certain points in a song. Otherwise, it's easy enough to set it and forget it.
Don't overlook these amps. You'll pay around $600 if you want something comparable. Also, because of the master volume know, you can do bedroom volumes.
One last note. I changed the tubes to JJs because I had a small problem with the amp which eventually worked its way out. Jet City is very responsive and helpful. I completely recommend this amp.
Thank you Jet City ! Jan 12, 2011
By Charlo I've owned this amp for about 6 months and I love it. This amp is a straight-forward single channel rock and blues amp but you can get into heavy metal with a pedal. The distortion is creamy sounding- and distinctly different from other tube amps at this price point (Peavey Valveking, Bugera V22, Crate V16, Blues Jr.) Thank you Mr Soldano! Not a particularly versatile amp- but I think this amp was not intended to be a jack-of-all-trades. What it does do it does wonderfully. Twenty tube watts is plenty for small gigs and jamming with a drummer. The build quality is excellent. This is the JCA 20H head combined with the Eminence special design speaker with added reverb. The reverb is tube driven and sounds lush, but not surfy. I've heard that this is essentially a Chinese-built Soldano Astroverb 16. This amp LOVES humbuckers. I would buy it again and again. The price has come down since I bought it and I think it's a ridiculous bargain at this point. I would also buy their new 50 watt 2-channel combo however I just don't need that much power. I'm a fan of Jet City !

Great Tone at an amazing price! Jul 17, 2010
By livesound2 Just got mine last night. I was comparing to the Orange, Vox, Marshall and Peavey combos and it blows them away at the price point. First of all it is loud (20W), and it is made of plywood and cold rolled steel. It is a real all-tube amplifier. Next, it is designed by Mike Soldano and the tone is fantastic!!! Pure rock and blues amp, so if you are looking for really clean, you can do it, but there is always a little grit in there. The reverb is tube driven and perfect the for the amp and it is a real 3-spring reverb! This is a single channel amp and does not have many features, but what it does have is a sound that will really amaze you for the price. For $399 there is nothing close.
