Not bad for the money May 28, 2010
By Robert L. Magni
"Bawb3"
I bought this as my first guitar. I've had it for about 5 months now. I like to play classic rock, hard rock, grunge, metal, and a little blues on occasion. It's very versatile in the respect that any genre you play on it sounds pretty good.
It made a GREAT beginner's guitar, but as I continue to improve my skills I'm starting to feel the need for a better one. The construction is decent, there was a lot of leftover dust inside the cavities in the body from whatever machined the holes. The neck feels good, and it's pretty easy to play. The medium frets are nice but I prefer jumbos. The entire fretboard is actually quite nice, rosewood I believe, and still hardly shows any wear - I play several hours a day.
As for the pickups... I'm still using the stock powersounds, which for the most part are junk, I only use the bridge humbuckers because they're the only ones that really sound good. The neck and center pickups are muddy and leave a lot to be desired as far as output and sound quality. My neck pickups are also loose and vibrate when playing.
The Trem bridge on this... to say the least, is garbage. I'm pretty sure the saddles are starting to rattle, if you use the trem, expect it to go out of tune very easily. The entire bridge construction just seems cheap and not very strong(I think it may be starting to bend too). However you cant expect much out of a trem bridge at this price range.
I've also been plagued by fret buzz since day 1 with this guitar, I've had it worked on once before and it still didn't completely go away, and is now coming back (Which should never happen so soon after being fixed). I've managed to adjust it to minimize the buzz myself and its not that audible unless you're really listening for it coming out of an amp.
The output jack comes loose really easily, I've had to take it apart and re-tighten it several times for it to even send a signal to the amp.
Now that my complaints are out of the way, this thing shreds HARD, the bridge pickups are HOT for passives, and you can really lay down some awesome metal riffs. I couldn't have been happier with it as a first guitar, and I intend on keeping it forever, but I've started looking for something of higher quality with a better bridge and pickups. You can play pretty much anything you like on this which is a plus, and the Ibanez tuners are actually pretty good.
Another note: If you get the gloss black body - it's incredibly hard to keep clean.
Overall it's a decent guitar, but it's perfect for beginners, and you really cant beat what you get at this price, hence my 4/5 stars. Expect a moderate amount of maintainence and adjusting to keep it sounding and looking good.

You will love this guitar as I do. The neck is very easy to play. The pickups are OK but come on you can't beat EMGS so I put some active EMG 81/85 pickups(Zakk Wylde uses this setup) in this thing and OMG it is beyond belief how great it sounds. My buddies can't believe how great this guitar sounds-buy it you'll love it!

Excellent Mid-Range Guitar Aug 24, 2010

With a gig coming up soon and my cheap rip-off strat sounding excessively horrible during practice sessions with my band, I had to go out and buy a new guitar, something more reputable. I went into a music store with about $500, it was a toss up between either an Epiphone Les Paul or the Ibanez RG170. After playing "The Black Knight", my mind was made up. It's tone is great, the pickups are solid but most of all, I got this for fast action on the fretboard. It's so easy to play and great for soloing and lead work. It worked perfectly for my gig and I would recommend it to anyone. One of the best guitar's you can get for the price.

Great guitar for the money! Dec 26, 2011
By Richard I've had this guitar for about 6 years now, and although I dont play it everyday I can honestly say that I am so happy with it that I will never get rid of it. Sure I'd like to by a 4k Gibson or something better but I can always count on this guitar. It's always in tune and sounds good. The action is great, the look is great, I'm not sure how much more I need for just a hobbyist. I almost bought a mexican strat instead but to be honest I just like the looks of this one better and I know guys with strats and I cant tell the difference in sound.. Anyway if you ask people that play a lot of electric guitar most have always upgraded theirs somehow or another anyway.. I also like that you plug in on the outside of the body rather than on the body like a strat..All in all don't be afraid to buy this one, you will def be happy with it.
