5Great Little Amp  Jul 02, 2011 By OldWave
After bumbling around for literally years trying to find an amp that was suitable for an ageing rocker whose band years are way behind him, but still has a roomful of guitars and stereo equipment that allows me to jam with the entire world of music, I could never find an amp that filled the bill to fit in my "man cave", and still do justice to the guitars that hang from the wall...and to the world class musicians that came out of the speakers of my stereo. Sure...there are a lot of great amps around...but they were either too big, too loud, or too pricey for my purposes. I had sold off all my band years amps, great as they were, but they either took up too much floor space or trying to tame them down for use in my room killed their tone. I've tried them all...Marshall...Vox...Peavey... Fender...et al. One after the other they either went back to the store, or were sold on eBay. Then I tried the Super Champ XD...it was an eye-opener...and even if it wasn't perfect, there was a potential beast under the Tolex. I have since changed out the speaker, and upgraded the tubes...and now, it is literally the best little killer amp I've ever played...and when I plug-in, I imagine that all those world class players coming out of the stereo speakers are only holding their collective noses at my playing skill...rather than the amp I'm using. Hats off to you Fender.

And now we come to the Vibro Champ XD. Want to know a little secret for having a nicely filled room of great guitar tone? Two amps. Place the second across the room, and it will accent the first amp and fill the room with natural delay from being across the room. The sound plane expands immediately, and everyone who steps into my "man cave" and hears this set-up goes..."wow, that sounds great". I chose the Vibro Champ XD for the second amp since I was very pleased with the Super Champ XD, and I did the exact same changes...new tubes and a Weber 10" speaker. Yes, the cabinet will fit a 10". Since it only has 5 watts, that 6V6 is pushed more to keep up, which only enhances its tone, and it has great tone...there are many who think it's better that the Super Champ, but I don't care...I've got 'em both. It's great fun, and great tone, all at far less than ear-splitting volume. Call me old, but I love 'em both and they are the best purchases and home set-up since my first Strat (and I won't say when that happened, but it was before the term "vintage" had been coined).

5An Excellent Practice or Small Gig Amp  Dec 26, 2011 By Daniel G. Lebryk
The Fender Vibro Champ is a great little amp. I'm amazed at how good this amp sounds. A small light weight package with a good set of voices that outputs a decent amount of sound.

This is a 5 Watt Tube amp with enough power to fill a medium sized room or the perfect practice amp. This is a much better and louder amp than the small $100 solid state starter / practice amps by all the major manufacturers. Fender uses two very standard tubes for pre- and amplification: 12AX7 and 6V6 (both are Fender branded tubes). These are nice clean tubes that react consistently.

The amp takes about 15 seconds to warm up and draws 45 Watts.

The cool part of this amp is the 16 voice settings. In reality the amp packs effects for 7 different amps, Tweed, Blackface, British, Hot Rod, Metal, Jazz, and Acoustic. The first five have three different levels of style each. Our other two amps are Marshalls, an acoustic and a half stack. If I'm being really honest, I like the sound of this amp a lot more than the half stack. This is a clean simple amp to use. The Marshall has a ton of tweaks that are hard to get exactly right.

The volume level on the different voices is nowhere near matched. Some voices are incredibly loud, others are really quiet. Switching voices means moving that volume knob a lot. Sadly, the volume only goes to 10.

Once the voice is selected, there are 5 effects settings possible with two or three level for each (Vibratone, Delay, Reverb, Chorus, and Tremolo). The F/X level knob adjusts the amount of the effect applied (set to 1, the effect isn't used at all). This is probably the least useful part of the amp. There is no pedal selection, so once the effect is selected and volume dialed in, you're kind of stuck with that until you fiddle with the amp again. There's no easy way to change the effect in the middle of a song.

There is a gain knob.

I like the speaker on this amp. It is nicely detailed with a good warm sound. The internal speaker is connected with a 1/4 inch jack, so it is possible to connect the amp up to another cabinet with a simple 1/4 inch speaker cable. Very nicely done Fender, most cheaper amps are hard wired to the speaker. The back panel also has a 1/4 inch jack Line Out.

This is a great small gig or practice amp. The sound is outstanding. The amp is used with a 1983 Gibson Lucille and a 2008 Les Paul Standard Plus.

5Fender Could Name the Price and I Would Buy This  Feb 21, 2012 By Corey Turner "The Musician"
The Fender Vibro Champ XD (in short) is a hybrid amp that utilizes modeling technology, and features a few effects. One 6V6 power tube, and one 12ax7 preamp tube push this little amp beyond the standard modeling domain. The amp is single channel, but has 16 'voicings' based off other recognized amps. From Fender black face cleans to Marshall Blues Breaker dirt, the Vibro Champ XD does a satisfying job for 200$. I find myself staying between the first three voicings, which focus on tweed tones and are unbelievably responsive, both touch sensitive gain and alert to pick attacks. Treat this as you would a tube amp, it is one! Roll back the volume and clean the signal, embrace different picking styles to unleash more gain.

No reverb tank to be found, but the spring reverb effect is so accurate I'm not complaining. The only down side to the effects on the amp is you can't really edit the time based effects, you're forced to choose which effects to blend (reverb and delay or delay and chorus etc). You can adjust the effects level though. I find the slap back delay and spring reverb to be the best, oddly enough the tremelo is the least appealing to me, ironic baring the name.

This amp makes for a great buy to those that are on a budget and wish to obtain tube like qualities, yet have the tweak ability of gain at lower volumes like a solid state amp. You can still achieve nice breakup upon cranking the amp and rolling back the gain. Overall Fender hit a home run in my books with this amp. I often see so many Fender Super Champ XD videos, I'd like to think there are a few viewers interested in its five watt counterpart. The VCXD comes loaded with a Fender special 8" speaker that is deceivingly loud, lively, and full ranged. Still those demanding a fuller sound can make use of an external cab (4 ohm minimal load). There is a jack to literally unplug speaker, I find myself running this amp through my Vox AC15 as though it's a preamp.

To save many the time and effort to seek out this info, I'll just type it out.
I'll also rate them 1/5, my assessment comes from the voicings ability to hold up in comparison to one another.

The voicings & effects(as found from the official Fender sites pdf manual file)

Tweed
1. Tweed Champ (clean) 5/5
2. Bassman (bit of break up) 5/5
3. Overdriven Tweed (dark driven sound) 5/5

Blackface
4. Bright Clean (doesn't break as easily, essentially SCXD channel 1)5/5
5. Slightly Driven BF 3/5
6. Heavily driven bright BF 2/5

British
7. Jangly tone (aka Vox slightly driven and compressed)3/5
8. Overdriven British stack (aka vintage Marshall tones)5/5
9. High-Gain Stack (aka JCM) 3/5

Hot Rod
10. High-Gain drive (much cleaner in comparison to 9, sounds a bit dull)1/5
11. High-Gain 'boutique' 2/5
12. More gain, more sustain 4/5

Metal
13. Dark super high-gain scooped metal tone (agreeably dark)3/5
14. Fender Metalhead (super scooped, ton of gain) 5/5

Jazz
15. Jazz King (dark, clean, lower volume) 2/5

Acoustic
16. Acoustasonic (great for single coils and finger picking, amazing clean surprising)5/5

----------Effects-------------
Vibratone: 1 Rotating Baffle, slow. 2. Rotating Baffle Fast
Delay: 1. 130ms (slapback) 2. 300ms 3. 450ms
Reverb: 1. Large Room 2. Concert Hall 3.Spring 4. Rev+Delay
Chorus: 1. Fast Sweep 2. Deep Sweep 3.Chorus+Del 4.Chorus+rev
Tremolo: 1. Low Speed 2. Medium speed 3. High Speed

I once heard a mention of what this amp is like to die hard tube amp enthusiasts trying to to stomach the diabolical mix and it fits nicely: Think of this amp as a straight simple tube amp with some of your favorite pedals loaded in it. Personally to me the the first three voicings are worth the admission price, it looks like a blackface era amp, the silver grill cloth is fabulous, the fact that I have multiple onboard effects make this one of the best on-the-go amps...and not just in the budget price range either! To me this outperforms Vox's Valvetronix modelling amp series in tone quality, and may get some Roland Cube players interested too. I use this amp heavily on youtube, and can go from Hendrix and Trower to AC/DC and Zeppelin in the flick of switch. I can back off to the second voicing and pull out some Stevie Ray Vaughan. Voice fourteen I tap into Metallica. Voice three I have one of the sweetest fullest and smoothest solo sounds which I have used for Mastodon sounding tracks and blues! Modelling amps have come a long way, the technology was there (Digitechs Johnson amps) yet for some reason it had guitarist running for the hills, only to hit a dark age where one could have hundreds of presets but find only three salvagable. The VC XD cuts to the chase, serious tone done right. No displays to play with, select a voicing, gain to taste, adjust your treble and bass, find a fitting effect, go one through ten on it and your done. I've used this amp with quite a few guitars, from Gibson's to Fender's, and will even use this amp to demo guitars at shops!

(the top two paragraphs were taken from my youtube channel description) I was working on a video review but the cam died, those who'd like to hear some of the voicings feel free to check this out:[...]

5SUPER happy with this amp!  Dec 05, 2011 By Jeff Robinson
I've tried a bunch of low-watt tube amps trying to find a tone that came close to my Fender Blues Deville 2x12. My #1 guitar is a '89 American Strat Standard, and I love that original Fender tone...

I've tried the Crate V8, Crate Vintage Club, an Epiphone Electar 10, and a host of pedals trying to emulate the Blues Deville, all-tube tone, but I never found that same "feel"... Until...

I bought this amp on a fluke. It was one of those Amazon Lighning Deals where you have to wait for the clock to tick-down before you see the sale price. I was watching a Schecter guitar that day and happenned to catch this deal just as it popped-up. So I jumped on it! Boy am I glad I did!

After fiddling with the controls for about an hour I found the sweet spot! Sure, it's not moving as much air as the 2-12's in the Blues Deville, but I'm hearing REAL Fender tube-driven tone... and my neighbors AREN'T! Mission accomplished! I can't wait to fiddle around some more and try driving some external cabinets to see if I can get a little more bottom-end out of it. For the moment I don't plan to change the tubes or stock speaker... It's just about right the way it is.

I'll update if I find anything to gripe about, but for now it's all good...

UPDATE - 1/31/12: I would add stars if I could. This is a really fun little amp for the money, and everyone who hears it is impressed with its tonal qualities. I have tried alternate speaker configurations (running my Blues DeVille 2x12 as an external cab) and it just keeps sounding better and better. I've heard rumors that Fender is discontinuing the Vibro Champ XD. I hope they don't, but if this is true, I'm really glad I got mine before they did!

5Amazing little amp  Jun 20, 2011 By Jon
Im not sure why the posters previous to me aren't quite satisfied with this particular amp. I have owned it for months now and use it for home recordings. If you love tube tone and want to be able to get a nice break up without cranking an amp to a non practice level, then this amp is for you. I have actually jammed with a drummer with this amp. You cant rehearse with a full band but at quiter levels it will perform just fine. It gets very loud for amp of this price range and size. The speaker held up quite well too. If you are looking for classic Fender tube tone for recording on a budget, pick up this little amp you wont be disappointed. If you want another channel look at the Super Champ Xd. Cheers
