5Far Exceeding the Standard  Aug 25, 2010 By pundit
I went to a brick and mortar store intent on buying the industry standard Shure SM58 or better. My main intention was to use the mic for live vocal performance with only some limited computer recording using Audacity or Windows Movie Maker.

To quote one large retailer; "The Shure SM58 Mic is world-renowned for its distinctive upper-midrange presence peak that ensures an intelligible, lively sound. Perfectly fits a performer's hand, balanced for total comfort during long gigs. Frequency response is a smooth, vocal-tailored 50Hz-15kHz, and the price is a bargain considering its life expectancy." And of course, "The Shure SM58 mic is legendary for its uncanny ability to withstand abuse that would destroy any other microphone." Those words about the Shure are important because they seem like a paradigm of the comments of most of the people that have reviewed the Shure SM58.

When I picked up the Shure SM58 it felt good in my hand - nicely weighted and very solidly built. I also liked the sound of it; however being my first serious microphone that was bound to be the case.

In the interest of due diligence I decided to try out a couple of other microphones in the same price range. This Blue Microphones enCORE 100 pleasantly surprised me. It was more sensitive than the Shure and boasted a brighter and crisper sound. For the kind of vocal work that I wanted to do (Jazz and Pop Standards) it seemed perfect.

The nail in the coffin was the fact that it is a much more beautiful microphone to look at and it feels more substantial in the hand (it is heavier). The lower price (as of this writing) and the beautiful felt-lined canvas carrying pouch weren't even necessary - I was already convinced after singing a few measures. I am very happy that I purchased the Blue Microphones enCORE 100.

5singer  Sep 16, 2010 By Stone Throbone
Wow doesn't say enough. This is one really super nice microphone. The fit and finish is of the highest level of craftsmanship and quality. I was just floored when I received this mic. Then came the putting it to work and the sound reproduction quality. It is smooth and clear, crisp and true. I have other brand mics and never realized how poor in quality of sound they really were until this one got plugged into my amp. I am very happy I choose this microphone. It is even better than my trusty Shure SM58.

5Great performance & construction for the price  Apr 20, 2011 By Bobby W.
I bought this microphone to record vocal tracks with FL Studio on my PC, just as a hobby.

Blue has been around for many years, and has a good reputation for quality products at decent prices.

This microphone is well-built, certainly looks like it would stand up to lots more abuse than it will ever see at my place.

The main thing of course is how it sounds, and it seems pretty accurate - it reproduces vocals very truthfully to my ears -of course it takes some experimenting to discover the different sounds you can get based on placement...

Only thing I kind of miss is an on/off switch. It's always "live", so depending on your application, that may be worth noting.

If you are looking for a very decent "first" microphone for vocals, you shouldn't go wrong with the enCORE 100.

4A Quality Dynamic Mic  Oct 25, 2010 By Avid83
It's a quality mic. I like the sound that comes out of it, it's not too thin or bassy, although you can do that by getting really close to it. I noticed it needs more gain to get the level I want, but with a decent mic pre this is a non issue. I got my unit on sale, so no complaints here.

5Outstanding alternative to the "Industry Standard"  Apr 19, 2012 By Mike Tarrani "Jazz Drummer"
Personally I like this mic for vocals more than the Shure SM58-LC Cardioid Vocal Microphone without Cable and I also believe that it is as good - if not better - than the Shure SM57 Microphone for micing instruments and amps.

One reason is the Blue mic is hotter, requiring no boost (I run Shures through a PreSonus Tubepre Single-Channel Vacuum Tube Mic Pre to compensate while the Blue is so much hotter that the tube pre provides too much gain at the lowest gain setting.)

There is a negative side, especially for vocalists who are used to the SM58 running through quasi-professional PA systems: the Blue will pick up every flaw that is sometimes masked by the SM58. In other words, while the Shure is somewhat forgiving of vocal 'deficiencies' because of its frequency profile and power range, the Blue will expose every flaw it 'hears'. On the other hand, this is a major plus when using the blue to mic instruments in lieu of an SM57 (or 58). My only real complaint is weight - the Blue is very heavy and I often fret over whether or not it is being securely held by holders such as the On Stage MY325 Dynamic Shock Mount Microphone Clip, which is the strongest I have found. Thus far I have had no problems, but it still is a nagging concern because of the weight of the Blue.

Back when I purchased my Blue it was priced substantially below its Shure competitor models, but today the Blue, the 58 and the 57 are all in the same price range. On such a level playing field I still prefer the Blue and will continue to opt for them over the venerable (and aging) SM58 and SM57.
