| | Description | The HT Studio 20H Head offers huge versatility for home, rehearsal or studio use. The carefully voiced preamp, coupled with a cathode-biased EL34 power amp, provides you with the ability to create wonderfully lush tube tones. The three-band EQ is augmented by the Infinite Shape Feature (ISF), which works with the EQ to provide infinite new tone-shaping control. Plus you get digital reverb, an effects loop and a speaker emulated output. From pure boutique cleans, to mild overdrive that cleans up by backing off the guitar volume control, right up to saturated distortion, this amp does it all. | |

Good Amp Feb 01, 2011
By smartino Pretty reasonably priced tube amp by a fairly new company. Can be used for at home practice and playing shows. It has two channels: clean and distortion, 3 Brand EQ, and effects loop.
The clean channel is amazing! Everything comes out nice a clear with lots of punch. Just plugging into the clean channel you can get any sound you can think of jazz, country, folk, rock whatever (I find it get U2/ The Edge sounds really well). The 3 brand EQ and tone knob will let you get exactly where you want to be with the clean sound.
The distorted channel is not the best, but its ok. Well let me clarify. This is not a "high gain" amplifier, which basically means you will not sound like Rammstein with just the gain on the amp. In the spectrum of guitar distortion you can go from a simple blues crunch to like 70's metal (think early Van Halen and Rhandy Roads) and everything in between. Now you can supplement with your own distortion or EQ pedals which I highly recommend if you want bigger badder distortion.
The clean channel works great with pedals, especially with time effects like delays or phasers. The distortion channel not so great with pedals. The sounds kinda of fight each other and it just doesn't sound great. Now in addition to the two channels there is an effects loop (FX Loop) which is fantastic. I run few pedals right into the amp on the clean channel and keep a few in the FX loop so I don"t have the signal going through like 40 pedals at a time.
So I would recommend using the clean channel with some kind of distortion pedal to get a really cool distortion and use the effects loop for your other pedals and stuff.
Overall a very simple and effect amp that doesn't cost a fortune. lets you get very specific sounds between the tone knob and the ISF knob (look it up cause its to much to explain). Can be played at home at low volume well and has enough horse power to play with a band at reasonable sized venues (provided you have a speaker cabinet of course).
Good for beginners up to semi professional musicians.
Great amp especially for the price. Jun 22, 2011
By Eric Bailey I first bought the Blackstar HT Stage 60 and I just wasn't 100% happy with the sound...although I loved having 3 channels. I sold that amp and later picked up this 20 watt head. Wow, this thing sounds really nice. A very boutique sounding clean channel with a useable tone control. I run this head on a 2x12 cab with Hellatone vintage 30's (Avatar speakers) and it really sounds good. I also have the matching Blackstar cabinet but it comes out a little Marshall "fizzy" for my taste ...but some are seeking that sound. I run the ISF knob at 7 to 11 o'clock and the gain between 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock depending on the songs we are playing. For the price, you're not going to find a better amp in my opinion. I run a digitech rp1000 via the 4 cable method and it sounds great. I can't explain why I love this 20 watt version and wasn't 100% happy w/ the Stage 60 combo version other than maybe I just didn't care for the stock speakers ...either way you will be happy with your purchase if you buy this amp.

"ND metalhead!"
I recently bought this amp to replace my cheap behringer combo amp. I was previously using a digitech rp500 with the behringer, and let me tell you the sound of the blackstar blows that away. It just sounds perfect. It is very easy to get a great metal tone. Not overly seething with distortion, but just a really solid punchy tone akin to Metallica, Megadeth, or Opeth. I couldn't be happier with this amp. This amp is also very loud. I was hesitant not really knowing how powerful 20 tube watts would be, but trust me, it is loud. You could easily play over a drummer with this head. The head does include what I believe to be a cheap speaker cable, though I upgraded to something better. This is not listed in the description. The one downside to this amp which is obvious looking at it is that it only has one equalization for both channels so whatever you equalize it to is applied to the clean and distorted channels. This is a minor downside to me compared to the price. If you're looking for a great starter tube amp like me do not pass up on the incredible tone to be had!
