Description

The debut release from The Jimi Hendrix Experience is widely regarded as the greatest, most influential debut release from any artist. When first released in 1967, Are You Experienced turned the music world upside down as Hendrix showed everyone exactly what it meant to be 'experienced.' Remastered from the original 2-track mixdown master tapes, this expanded 17-song collection features the ageless classics "Purple Haze," "Red House," "Stone Free," "Hey Joe," and "Are You Experienced."

5Vinyl track list correction; sound quality  Mar 11, 2010 By Eugene
I just wanted to point out that item description on Amazon is incorrect for this 2010 vinyl reissue. It should only include those tracks on the original US edition.

About sound quality - I own the tri-color original and this one hands down sounds incomparably better! Amazing clarity of voice, instruments, bass is in a right place - just a perfect balance! Balance is a key word here. To me it is the best sounding Hendrix ever. And it is not easy for me to say that because in 99.9% I prefer originals or early pressings to reissues. This reissue may just change my mind. Highest recommendations! P.S. Listened on Project-Debut III with ortofon 5E.

5Analog Remaster is Exceptional  Mar 12, 2010 By Greg Beams
I have listened to Jimi for a long time and while I have purchased some of the various non-studio releases that the Hendrix estate put out over the years I was always dissapointed because I just didn't think the sound lived up to the impact and mix of Jimi's three studio albums. When I learned that they were remastering the studio albums I decided to go ahead and purchase them. I could not be happier with the amazing sound, clarity and overall musical balance that these albums possess. On many of the less well known tracks they were able to clean up a lot of the noise that otherwise obscured some of the softer instrumentation or vocals without reducing the impact of the Hendrix sound. While on certain standards like Purple Haze it is harder to appreciate the changes because I suspect I consider the noise to be part of the unique sound of this track (when in reality it was simply noise from the poor recording equipment used at the time) I have to say that overall this album is a real experience that Hendrix fans won't want to miss.

If you are fortunate enough to have a decent turntable and system then I would highly encourage you to get this all analog remastering from the original tapes. It is worth the price and lets you hear this great album with a new appreciation for the Hendrix magic. Highly Recommended.

5An example of why vinyl sounds better  Mar 22, 2010 By Vinyl Eddy "Andrew - Vinyl Eddys"
This reissue really blew me away. We all know the songs and have heard them throughout our life. On this vinyl, I hear so much more than I'm used to. My favorite is "Wind Cries Mary" because I've never heard it sound so good. If you want to convince someone that vinyl is superior, this album might just do it.

3Don't scuttle your old REPRISE pressings just yet!  Jan 15, 2011 By Swamiji
I am surprised to see many here comparing this latest EH reissue favorably against the original Reprise vinyl pressings from the 60's and 70's. I beg to differ.

The Tri-color Reprise from 1967 has incomparably greater dynamic range, as well as greater contiguity with the original master tapes which, as many will attest, are apt to degrade or go missing over time and end up replaced with 2nd or even 3rd generation safety copies. I for one do not buy this business about EH locating the first generation master tapes in the possession of a private collector in Texas: this sounds too much like a marketing gimmick for my taste. Moreover, from what I am able to gather, the latest vinyl release of AYE on Sony Legacy is just the '97 digital remaster loaded onto vinyl and not, as many wrongly assume, the product of a purely analogue process. This being the case, it suffers from some of the same shortcomings as the CD version, namely increased compression and digital "hardness", of which the original analogue Tri-color is completely free.

Many listeners unfortunately mistake the increased loudness created through maximization and narrowing of the dynamic range for "better sound quality", though this just isn't the case, since it gives the sound what many have aptly referred to as a "hard edge" and further serves to obscure acoustic separation and detail preserved within the wider (though not seeming as bright or as loud) sound stage of the original pressing. So my advice to those who are considering selling or trading their Tri-color or tan label Reprises and replacing them with these latest whiz-bang "Eddie Kramer-did-it-and-he-knew-Jimi!" pressings, you would do well to give both copies another judicious listen before consenting to trade the priceless cultural artifacts of a fabled era for the sham pearls of a corporate marketing machine that is now eagerly attempting to capitalize, gallingly enough, on the inspired efforts of a musical genius in whose destruction it played a substantial and reprehensible role.

And far from "beating" the Tri-Color "hands down" in audio quality, this pressing appears to be thoroughly creamed by even the 1970's tan label Reprise reissue.

Besides, when was the last time you remember getting an original Reprise Jimi Hendrix record that was pressed off-center, warped, and had little bits of white paper stuck to its edges?

5I Really Love This Album  Apr 21, 2011 By Daniel G. Lebryk
Are You Experienced is my favorite Jimi Hendrix album. For somebody new to Hendrix, this is one of the best purchases you could possibly make; it is Hendrix at his absolute best.

The best way to listen to Hendrix, well I'm kind of old school about this; vinyl and Hendrix are just a match made in heaven. Personally, this feels like the only way to listen to his amazing guitar work. Spending twenty minutes per side, listening to his music is a great relaxed way to listen.

Many years ago I owned this album on vinyl. It is long gone even after it was completely worn out - old Garrard automatic turntables were really rough on albums. Purchasing this used without knowing the quality of the album, just seemed like a risky idea. Aside from the fact that those original used discs are expensive.

Of all the Hendrix reissues, this is probably the worst recording of the group. There is truth to the sense that this is a harsh sharp recording, more like the CD releases than true analog. Comparing this album to Electric Lady Land (an outstanding recording) and Band of Gypsies, this recording just sounds a lot like the CD. The pressing I have is perfect, absolutely pristine, clean, pop free, and perfectly centered. 180gram vinyl is truly amazing, it is almost impossible to bend the LP.

This album includes a beautiful full sized booklet with big pictures of Hendrix. I have gotten so used to little tiny booklets in CD's; it is fantastic to see beautifully printed, large images.

I still highly recommend this album. The mix might be harsh, but Hendrix is so worth hearing on vinyl. This is still a less expensive path to take than buying a vintage used album. Taking the slow casual route to listening to music on vinyl is such a pleasure. It is like the slow food revolution, sit and enjoy your meal (music) instead of a fast food pit stop.
